Core Functions

The Department provides the following services:

• Integrated poverty alleviation programmes through sustainable development programmes in partnership with implementing agencies (such as non government organisation (NGOs) community base organisations (CBOs) and faith based organisations (FBOs);
• Integrated services to people infected and affected by HIV and AIDS;
• Integrated services to children, youth, women, people with disabilities, older persons , victim empowerment, substance abuse and other vulnerable Persons/groups
• Social welfare safety net; and
• Demographic and social data for planning.

These services are supported through corporate services including financial management and other support services (such as information systems, facility management and other non personal health services).

Department of Health Strategic Goals

• Implement comprehensive HIV and AIDS care, treatment and management, Tuberculosis (TB), Sexual Transmitted Infections (STIs) and other communicable diseases programmes
• Strengthen Districts Health Services and Primary Health Care services
• Improve Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
• Provide logistical support services including pharmaceuticals
• Infrastructure development including hospital revitalization, clinic upgrading and maintenance
• Human Resources management issues
