Dr Carol Thomas specialised in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the University of Cape Town. She has been in private practice since 1991 and currently has rooms at Suite 208 Library Square, Claremont Medical Village, Wilderness Road, Claremont with surgical attachment to Kingsbury Hospital. She is a member of several professional organisations, including the South African Medical Association, the South African Menopause Society (she also sits on the Council), the South African Society of Obstericians and Gynaecologists, the North American Menopause Society, the South African Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the South African Society of Uro-Gynaecology. She has won the SJ Behrman Prize for the best dissertation toward the Master of Medicine degree in Obstetrics & Gynaecology obtained at the University of Cape Town in 1994 for her work on Class and Race as Determinants for Pubertal Development and the onset of the first menstrual period. She has also received the Award for Selfless Dedication and Commitment to Reproductive and Sexual Health and Rights from PPASA (Planned Parenthood Association of South Africa).

She has been a women's health activist since the 80's and has contributed at National level to Policy Guidelines and Development in the areas of Reproductive Health. She was one of a 12 member task team mandated to produce the National Contraceptive Guidelines and was instrumental in the design of a Women's Health Card which is retained by women. She is a part-time consultant in the UCT Dept. of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Groote Schuur Hospital and is involved in post-graduate surgical teaching as well as undergraduate teaching. Having grown up in Elsies River on the Cape Flats, she has always located her medical discipline within its psycho-socio-sexual context e.g. the link of gender based violence to gynaecological conditions.

She has co-edited The South African Women's Health Book and has published on Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. She has also reviewed Endometriosis for the Health24.com website. She has been an examiner for MBCHB graduates and has examined at M Phil level in Paediatrics, Maternal and Child Health.

She is a speaker at academic & community based forums. Radio interviews occur regularly on issues of women's health. While working in the NGO sector she was leader of a IPPF (International Planned Parenthood Federation) team to assess reproductive health services in the para-statal arena in Tanzania. She, with Dr Malefatsane Ngatane from Diepkloof, Soweto, represented the SA NGO affiliate at the IPPF World Assembly in the Phillipines in 1995 when SA was re-admitted to the world body after our first democratic election.

The full range of gynaecological surgery, including endoscopic and minimally invasive surgery is offered and Dr Thomas is passionate about continued skills upgrading. She expands on this commitment with her weekly surgical teaching session to specialists in training at Groote Schuur Hospital. Special clinical professional interests include Pre-pubertal & Adolescent Gynaecology, endocrinology with special interest in Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome & the Menopause.

Her passion remains exploring cost-effective, quality health service delivery models for women which are self-sustaining and economically viable.

The establishment of theWomanSpace, a nurse based primary women’s health care service is a venture that runs parallel and is overseen by the specialist service.

Dr Thomas received a Social Innovation Award from the SAB Foundation for her mHealth project iMobiMaMa which used mobile technology to provide community based maternal care. Travelling and spending time with her family constitute her non-professional interests.
