State Hospitals - State Hospitals - Boitumelo Regional Hospital - Kroonstad, Free State, South Africa

Background

Boitumelo Regional Hospital is located in the town of Kroonstad and the only regional hospital within the Fezile Dabi Health District. There are a total of 1,018 beds in the Fezile Dabi Health District, with estimated 704 level 1 and 312 level 2 beds. Overall Boitumelo Hospital contains 33.4 percent of the total beds in the health district. Boitumelo Hospital had previously 340 approved beds, but currently 312 beds are in use due to the construction process.   With the completion of the revitalization process 452 beds will be available. Boitumelo functions as both a District and Regional Hospital and there is currently no plan to build a district hospital within the Moqhaka District. As a result Boitumelo attends to level 1 and level 2 patients.

The Free State Department of Health had identified Boitumelo Regional Hospital as a priority revitalization site. The upgrading of Boitumelo Regional Hospital had already started in 1999.

Completed areas are: Nurses Home with 64 rooms, Doctors Quarters, Out Patient Department (OPD), Psychiatric Unit, Maternity, and Patient Wards. Current and planned projects include Casualty and the renovation of the old hospital.
