An integrated approach to health promotion in the workplace combines prevention of occupational diseases and non-occupational diseases. This integrated approach addresses simultaneously lifestyle factors for disease such as dietary, tobacco use, alcohol use and screening for hypertension and the potential contribution of workplace hazards such as exposures to dust, fumes, vapours and noise. A workplace-based programme offers the advantages of ready accessibility to workforce and health care providers familiar with work hazards. The key to a successful programme is joint involvement of workers, union and management in the planning and implementation, assuring accessibility to the workplace, and providing incentives for participation. Such integrated health promotion programmes hold the promise of significantly improved health status among employees.
