The AIDS Foundation of South Africa (AFSA), established in 1988, was the first registered AIDS Non-Government Organisation (NGO) in South Africa.

AFSA acts as a link between donors and Community Based Organizations (CBOs) working in the HIV/AIDS sector, placing donor funds with strategically selected CBOs and providing them with ongoing management, technical support & capacity building. This enables them to implement relevant and effective interventions to improve the health status and well being of their communities.

AFSA believes that the best way to implement such programmes is by working through CBOs, because these are made up of people from the target communities who understand and experience the needs and challenges. The assumption that communities have limitless resilience and will be able to cope with the catastrophic impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic is simply not true. They need support!

AFSA's greatest strength lies in its dedicated and competent work force. The organisation employs a core staff (link) of fourteen. A Board of Directors (link) ensures that the organisation remains focused and accountable to donors.

Over the years, AFSA has developed considerable management and technical expertise. In the process it has gained a reputation for professionalism, without losing its strong community commitment, and has gained considerable credibility with donors.
