The South African Nursing Council Approved Nursing Education Institutions

One of the functions of the S A Nursing Council is to approve Nursing Education Institutions (NEI's) and the Training Programmes presented by those institutions.

Council is empowered under two separate pieces of legislation to perform this function. These are:
• The Nursing Act, 1978 - which makes it illegal for any institution in South Africa to provide education and / or training intended to qualify a person to practise as a nurse or a midwife unless both the institution and the programme of education and training are approved by the Nursing Council; and

• The South African Qualifications Authority Act, 1995 - in terms of which the Nursing Council is accredited as an Education and Training Quality Assurance Body (ETQA) and, as such, is charged with the quality assurance of nursing education and training Providers and Courses / Unit Standards. In fulfilling these two obligations, the Council is protecting the rights of;

• the Public to receive care from a nurse or midwife who has received a high quality education intended to equip him / her to provide competent, compassionate and ethically based nursing care; and

• the Learner to receive education and training that meets all the requirements for accreditation according to the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and that will be accredited on the National Learner Records Database (NLRD).
