Trauma Society of South Africa

The Trauma Society is the prevention and mitigation of trauma due to all forms of mechanical injury (penetrating and blunt) through the propagation of quality treatment and appropriate surgical intervention. We attempt to fulfill the aims of the World Health Organization (WHO) declaration on Emergency Care for the injured in South Africa (see link at bottom of the page) and provide the standards for accreditation of Trauma Units according to the nationally agreed criteria. We are an affiliate of the South African Medical Association and a component of the Association of Surgeons of South Africa and a sister organization of EMSSA. The WHO violence and injury prevention program is actively supported. Please visit www.who.int for more information on their work.

Trauma Society is also the parent body in South Africa for the Advanced Trauma Life Support course for Doctors® of the American College of Surgeons, the Definitive Surgical Trauma Care course for senior operating doctors (registrars and surgeons) as well as the Trauma Foundation, our corporate interaction and trauma prevention wing.
