Elbe Boshoff Audiology - Audiologists - Table View, Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa

Currently my practice is focussed on proving diagnostic hearing testing services for people of all ages, the fitting of hearing aids, assistive listening devices and hearing protection. I also provide industrial audiological services.

Most adults are able to undergo a standard hearing test. Children under the age of 6 years are tested in ways that are age appropriate. The hearing of young babies (under the age of 7 months) is tested with special equipment (for e.g. ota- ocoustic emissions) and does not require participation from the baby.

The field of hearing aid technology is constantly changing and I strive to provide clients with devices that are state of the art, that are chosen to meet their specific needs and that are fitted appropriately.

An exciting new development in the field of hearing aids is devices that are significantly smaller than traditional aids, making them cosmetically more appealing and acceptable to users. Many children with normal hearing struggle to hear in a classroom environment. This is often due to the presence of background noise or poor classroom acoustics. An assistive listening device called an FM system may help to alleviate this problem by making the signal (the voice of the teacher) louder than the noise. The purpose of custom made hearing protection is to prevent or reduce the possibility of noise induced hearing loss. Industrial audiometry services are provided on request.

Previous work experience: I spent a number of years studying and working in the USA. After obtaining a Masters degree from Washington University in St. Louis (Central Institute for the Deaf) in 1995, I completed a Clinical Fellowship Year at the House Ear Clinic, Inc. in Los Angeles. I also worked as a Clinical Audiologist at the University of Missouri, Columbia and as a Research Associate at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
