| Info: Hottentots Holland Hospital (Helderberg Hospital) - Somerset West, Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa Hottentots Holland Hospital is situated in the town of Somerset West, and serves as a district hospital for the Helderberg basin. Patients are also referred to the hospital from surrounding areas in the Overberg district. There are 120 inpatient beds which cater for most specialties, including Surgery, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Opthalmology, and there is also a 3 bedded Intensive Care Unit. The fulltime medical staff consists of 13 generalist doctors, assisted by part time specialists in all disciplines. There is a busy Casualty and Outpatients Department, and doctors from the hospital also perform sessional work at surrounding Primary Health Care clinics. Training posts are available for doctors who wish to prepare for the Diploma in Family Medicine (a 2 year course), or the 4 year Masters Degree in Family Medicine, both courses being under the auspices of the Dept of Family Medicine, Stellenbosch University. A Senior Family Practitioner present at the hospital assists with both under and postgraduate training in Family Medicine. |
