Industry Association for Responsible Alcohol Use (ARA)

Individual companies within the South African liquor industry have for many years been acutely aware of the need to prevent the abuse of their products and have tried to ensure that consumers enjoy the benefits which the responsible use of alcohol has bestowed on humanity for thousands of years.

In an era in which private and social problems are frequently politicised to the point where they become public problems, the major companies in the industry feel the need to sharpen their focus and expertise in this area in order to ensure, objective, scientific debate, problem solving and policy making.

The South African liquor industry is however highly competitive and co-operation between competing parties and groups is therefore rare.
In this environment it took almost five years to create a loosely constituted forum to address what the industry refers to as the alcohol issue.

In 1986 this forum became the Social Aspects of Alcohol Committee. In 1996 the association's name was changed to the Industry Association for Responsible Alcohol Use (ARA)
